Leadership development

Leadership has many levels and definitions.

As members of Norwich University’s Corps of Cadets, students begin to understand what leadership means, and put that knowledge into practice by helping others to grow and develop. It’s a model that sets students up for success in the Corps of Cadets and beyond.

The Corps of Cadets

The Corps of Cadets is a four-year progressive leadership experience where each year builds upon the lessons and success of the previous. In the first year (also known as Rook year), cadets learn to work as a team and follow the orders of more experienced cadets. During their upperclassmen years, cadets learn responsibility, leadership by example and to set and achieve goals aligned with the mission of the Corps of Cadets and Norwich University.

Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC)

Norwich University is recognized as the birthplace of ROTC, so it is fitting that the two institutions are closely aligned. It is also an extraordinary opportunity unique to a military college.

Almost every cadet participates in six semesters of ROTC training, whether they intend to seek a commission or not. All four branches of the Armed Services—Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force—are present on campus. Each ROTC unit teaches its own approach to leadership theory, and provides practical leadership opportunities in the classroom and the field. Cadets who contract for a commission will take eight semesters of ROTC.
